Layoff readiness kit

A planning checklist for doing a workforce reduction with dignity. General guidance only, not legal advice; confirm requirements with your employment counsel.

Last updated October 13, 2026

4–8 weeks before

  • Confirm the business case, selection criteria and a fairness review with legal counsel.
  • Check whether federal WARN (generally 100+ employees, 60 days' notice) or a state mini-WARN law applies.
  • Decide severance, benefits continuation and the support package for every person affected.
  • Pick your transition support vendor so it's ready on notice day.

1–2 weeks before

  • Write the employee message: clear, kind, specific about pay, benefits and next steps.
  • Train managers with a short script and a list of questions they can't answer (refer to HR).
  • Prepare each person's packet: separation letter, benefits summary, support card with their portfolio link.
  • Plan for the team that stays: what they'll hear, who they can ask.

Notice day

  • Meet privately and in person or on live video when possible; never by mass email alone.
  • Hand over the packet and the support card. Give time to review any release before signing.
  • Send the team-wide message the same day.

First 30 days

  • Check that every person got their support link and benefits information.
  • Share a totals-only update with leadership (engagement, not individual data).
  • Thank managers and check in with the team that stays.
